Man Utd defender Eric Bailly did not attend the player of the year awards ceremony at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Eric Bailly missed the Manchester United player of the year awards ceremony on Tuesday night through illness. the defender was given permission to miss the Old Trafford event because he was feeling unwell. Striker Romelu Lukaku also did not attend the end of season do due to the ankle injury he suffered in the weekend win over Arsenal.
Bailly, 24, has started one of the last six United matches and was fit for Sunday’s visit of Arsenal but overlooked, despite Phil Jones suffering an injury. Jones was present at Old Trafford for the annual awards gathering with his pregnant wife.
Ivory Coast centre half Bailly suffered from a virus last month and is believed to have been vomiting shortly before United’s defeat to West Brom on April 15. Bailly travelled with the United squad to Bournemouth three days later and was named on the bench but was not 100 per cent fit to feature.
Bailly trained in London at Fulham’s Craven Cottage ahead of the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham but Mourinho decided not to risk him after Jones returned impressively in the win at the Vitality Stadium alongside Chris Smalling. Bailly was fit for the Arsenal fixture on Sunday and trained the previous day but Mourinho recalled Marcos Rojo to the bench instead.
Former Villarreal enforcer Bailly has missed 26 of United’s 52 matches this season through injuries and ailments and was also unavailable for their European Super Cup and Champions League opener due to suspension. The Ivory Coast international has only managed 14 starts and two substitute appearances in the entire campaign.
United signed Bailly for £30million nearly two years ago and he formed a rock-steady axis with Jones in pre-season before they started the first six Premier League matches, conceding just twice.
But Bailly’s injury on international duty in October ended the run and he has made a startling four league starts since.
